Ride Report - June 26, 2010 - by John

Home Patch Ride - 26. 6.2010
What we lacked in quantity we made up for in quality! Seven of us met at out usual meeting place and by the time the ride was over we had covered 35 kilometres. Our route was one we have traversed on many occasions......along Ahuza, down Reh Ha Park and then on to the off road track heading West. We rode along the Western side of the Tel Aviv - Haifa railway line on the border of Kfar Shmaryahu and then made or way through Rishpon, crossed the bridge over the Highway 2 (The Coastal Road) and went on to the Sharon Coast Nature Reserve to one of our favourite lookout points. This was a first visit for two of our riders and I believe they were just as impressed as we werre on out forst visit to this spot. Then it was on to Yaqum and Spingo where we stopped for some refreshments before heading back home. The weather was near perfect and except for a few short sandy patches the track was good. All in all we had a great ride and even had an opportunity of seeing some great vintage cars at Buono cafe (see the photos).
Ride Report - June 19, 2010 - by Avi

Home Patch Ride 12.6.2010
A Case for Helmets

17 of us gathered opposite Yad Labanim on what promised to be a really hot day. We sped off on one of our regular routes, but did it "backwards", so everything looked familiar, but different. The heat stayed away because of the cloud cover, which made for really pleasant riding conditions. Along the way, three dropped out to go home and the rest of us completed around 33 km, accompanied by the Singing Sisters (alias Ingride and Merrill), who spurred us on with their rendition of 70s hits.

Evidence that a helmet really does serve its purpose can be seen in the pictures. Avi came off his bike - his forehead, hands and arms were badly scraped, but his head was saved a nasty bang. His helmet cracked from the impact. So, here is the lesson for all of us!

We stopped off at the Agam Cafe to enjoy refreshments (and sympathise with Avi). Udi's wife also joined us, but we haven't been able to persuade her to join in our fun....!
Ride Report - A ride with Blind Cyclists - June 11th, 2010-by Adrian Wolff

Riding with the Blind - 11.6.2010
The Jews created the Seventh Day (Genesis 2:2) - a different day of the week. Modern society has evolved to a two-day (and sometimes three-day) week-end. Football fans look forward to the week-end of excitement, drinking and comardie. Blind cyclists look forward to 'seeing' cyclists join them on their Friday weekly cycling outings.

The mission of the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind is to improve the quality of life of blind people by providing them with safe mobility, independence and self-confidence through the faithful assistance of guide dogs.

Meeting these 'blind' you would never realize they cannot 'see' as their body language is so 'natural'. These cyclist are strong and fit from their serious weekly rides, and they are dependant on others to bring them to the starting point, to ride tandem and of course to particiapte in the ride. I occasionaly join them (Friday is often difficult for me).

Cyclenix riders participating besides myself were John Candy Cohen, Hylton Sher, Barbara Sher and Moshe Abromowitz.

We arrived at the Israel Guide Dog Center in Beit Oved from where we rode to Palmahim and back, some 22 kilometers through agricultural fields and sandy trails.

Before getting started I was approached by the leader and asked if any of us (5) Cyclenix riders have ever riden on a tandem. No, the only ones are Baruch and Harriet who could not attend. They were short of a seeing 'capitan' resulting in one of the blind staying at the center, alone in her dark world. She obviously looked forward to the ride.

I volunteered. Practiced alone on a tandem in the car lot for about 50 meters. Oy Vay - it's like driving a truck. The long wheel-base makes the bicycle clumsy and heavy. Then circled the car park sitting at the back (stoker) while a volunter pedalled in the forward (capitan) position. I was frightened - the bicycle has to be upright at all times and you have absolutely no control sitting at the back. What is the alternative when my inexperince could cause bodily injury.

Orli got on the back and asked if I ever rode a tandem to which I honestly replied "never". Now both of us were nervous. I put my ego and hesitation aside. We stared off, luckily for me the first 500 meters were slightly downhill (on a sand trail) which allowed me to 'get the feel' concentrating all the time, saying aloud - loose sand, stones, bumpy section, turning left or right, uphill, downhill, braking, stopping etc.

With a few minutes both of us began to relax, never crashed, while I made very few mistakes. Orli is an experienced rider who enjoys the speed and wind encouraging me to ride faster and soon we were among the leaders of the group. Orli needed a pit stop. For us guys it is not a problem. I stopped and waited for a female rider to accompany her. Some of the sections had very loose sand while others steep inclines. Orli was not comfortable walking on uneven or stoney surfaces, instructing me to pedal hard regardless of the terrain.

Orli thanked me for participating and allowing her to ride, while I thanked her for allowing me to make this 'mitzvah -blessing'

There were over 20 riders and on this occasion, women were the majority of the 'blind riders'.

PS. Kol Ha'kavod to Adrian for: a) Imtroducing Cyclenix to this wonderful opportunity to perform a very worthwhile "mitzvah" and, b) bravely accepting the challenge to be a "captain" and by so doing, allowing Orli to participate - John Cohen

Home Patch Ride 5.6.2010
18 riders gathered on a very pleasant Saturday morning at the usual place for the traditional "home patch" ride. One of them without helmet. After it was explained to her that she cannot ride with the group like that, John went on a detour to bring her an extra one he has at home. But she elected to go AWOL in the middle of the Ahuza street uphill, and so we remained 17 only.

Not that this setback reduced the good spirits of any of the participants. We all followed David's desperate attempts to confuse us by leading the group criss cross across the unchartered terrain of the Bnei Zion wilderness, at the end of which (surprise!!) we landed at Spingo.

Spingo continued to confuse us, by relocating the group to the front balcony and by assigning us a waitress whose experience and skills were unsurpassed by any we saw so far. Still, after taking the same order four times, even the last of us received their coffee (some of us even received what they ordered) and after 45 minutes of good company and some 30 kms, we all parted towards home and another peaceful family Shabbat.
Ride Report - Ben Shemen - May 29th, 2010-by David

Ben Shemen Ride - 29.5.10
Participants: 14 including newcomer Felix who came with Frederic - welcome and we hope to see you again. Also good to see Benny and Gabi (hereinafter "Gabi 2") riding with Cyclenix after a long absence, and Steven, joining us on one of our more "serious"(?!) rides.

Route: From the Nektafim turn-off (a few hundred metres east of Mevo Modiim) westwards as far as Mitzpeh Gamzu (also our highest elevation) and back via Mitzpeh Modiin. Total distance 20 kms. For GPS details of our route and other related data see: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/34903152 (which also includes a facility to view our route on Google Earth).

Bottom Line: To those who are familiar with the Ben Shemen area, to say that we had a "Ben Shemen Ride" requires no further description. BS never disappoints, never ceases to offer a challenge no matter what the level of riding skill. There is something for everyone at BS, from "impossible" (except for Gabi 2) uphills, scary downhills, singletracks, white paths, stones and boulder hopping, and everything else in between, all within a setting which only Nature's beauty can deliver. All that, coupled with the usual excellent company, could only add up to one thing - A GREAT RIDE.

PS. by JOHN. Our sincere thanks to David and his GPS for being such a great guide.

Home Patch Ride 22.5.10
I have permitted myself a little poetic license as I did not participate in the earlier part of the ride and therefore I can only use evidence laid before me from various sources. Firstly I can use John's input as he informed me qte: "we did a reverse of one of our usual rides with an extra add-on to time our arrival and Cafe Buono for 10am. There were 17 riders + two more when Dina and I joined the ride." Unqte.

So now that we have some material laid before us on the earlier part of the ride I can now learn from the photos to add a little more detail. It was evidently very hot as one can see that David and Ingride were sweating heavily on arrival at Bueno. Good realistic photography!!! The riders at some point passed by Yaqum Reserve where it seems most preferred to walk down the steep incline at the northern end of the reserve and the ride was planned to end up at cafe Bueno in time to begin shooting a video at 10.00. It was a formidable cast and a very pretty young photographer who participated in the "Action", "cut" etc sequences that would later comprise a clip showing Shaul's involvement in Cyclenix rides. The clip will be shown next month in it's premiere at Shaul's 80th birthday celebration and hopefully will also be linked via U Tube to our site in the near future.

By the time the shooting ended we were all anxious to get back home as by then the Sharav was almost unbearable and was taking its toll. We pushed past the Avocado groves and continued along the railway line to Rishpon in high temperature conditions as many drained their liquid supplies. Some stopped to rest and to our good fortune the Sharav started to ease just as we reached the Ra'anana boundary. It was a reminder that rides will begin earlier as of next Saturday, the only way to deal with the oncoming summer heat. Special thanks to all who contributed their time and photogenic good looks to enhance the video. And warm regards to that pretty and devoted granddaughter of Shaul's who helped to make the ride a little different.

Home Patch Ride - 15th May, 2010
Participants: 8
Route: One that we have travelled many times. Along Ahuza Street, branching off half way down Reh. Ha'Park and then making our way towards Kfar Smaryahu through the fields. North along the Western side of the Tel Aviv - Haifa Railway line to Yakum and onto Udim and then homeward bound with our usual stop at Spingo for breakfast and onto Ra'anana.
Comments: Hopefully the low turn out was because of the counter attraction, The Wheels of Hope Ride in the Galilee. Anyway, the weather was hot but not too hot and the compant was great. I was good to be back with the group again.
Ride Report - Elishema May 8, 2010 -by Ted

Ellishema-Einat 08.05.2010
We were not disappointed by the weather forecast for the ride to Einat. It was spot on. A Sharav that in truth only bothered us on the last stretch coming back to Elishema.
We were fourteen riders at the outset but Izik did a number on us at some point but as he and David led us at the beginning and he disappeared only on the way back, he had already performed more than the his fair share of the leadership so he can be excused.
We set of along the Cana and Ayalon streams where groups of lovely teens were busy harvesting the reeds and we greeted them and cheered them for their diligence. When we forded the Ayalon further along some of the riders decided to test the waters and got their tootsies wet just to add a little spice to the ride. At the Einat bridge we split asunder and regrouped at the Gas Station for brunch. We all agreed that while we kept moving the Sharav was not an issue but upon stopping one could feel the Sharav effect particularly when not under shade. So when we set off for the return which by then was after 10,00 the heat was well on its way.
Fredriks puncture was timely as it happened at the Gas Station which supplies not on Gas but air so "Look Mum" no manual pumping! Afterwards we were forced to do an about- turn by overgrown weeds on old trails but we did ride back along the railway as planned for the major part of the way back to Elishema. At one turnoff, we lost Shaul who did make it back on his own but not without giving us some missed heartbeats.
All's well that ends well in Elishema. A good ride with good friends.
